RM1, the new Italian region, is available in our service Openstack as a Service.

This is aanother primary region in Italy, geographically distant and independent from MI1 and MI2. An important evolution for those who want to design more distributed IaaS infrastructures, with more options in terms of off-site, business continuity and resilience, while remaining in the national territory.

The new RM1 region is hosted in Aruba datacenter in Rome and was created to expand the geographical perimeter of the service. Its value lies not only in adding a new activation site, but in making all those projects where geographical distance really matters more effective.

Why is RM1 an important innovation in Openstack as a Service?

With RM1, we are introducing a new region that stands out from the previous ones due to its geographical separation from MI1 and MI2.

This means having a new option for designing cloud infrastructures:

  • more Distribute on the national territory;
  • more suitable for off-site scenarios;
  • more consistent with business continuity needs;
  • more fflexible in managing workloads and virtual environments.

RM1 is not an availability zone, but a full-fledged primary region, designed to be used both in new activations and in architectures that require a more marked geographical distribution.

What changes compared to other regions?

From a functional point of view, RM1 provides the same functionality already introduced with MI2.

From an architectural point of view, however, it introduces a new element: a region geographically distant from Milan, useful for those who want to avoid concentrating data, applications and environments in the same geographical area.

Compared to MI2, the main differences are:

  • different datacenter, hosted at Aruba;
  • geographical location in Rome, instead of Milan.

Compared to MI1, RM1 also offers an infrastructure that is more aligned with the capabilities already available in the MI2 region.

Features available in RM1

  • New Flavors G3, G3S, G3W based on AMD technology: ideal for enterprise applications and business critical loads;
  • Encrypted storage by default, for even stronger and more compliant data protection;
  • Nested Virtualization active: perfect for test, lab and educational environments;
  • Floating IP with port forwarding, for a more efficient use of public IPs;
  • Load Balancer as a Service, to easily manage application redundancy;
  • Skyline UI: new modern and simplified graphic interface;
  • Upload private images up to 100 GB, in full autonomy.

When to choose RM1 in Openstack as a Service?

RM1 can be a particularly attractive choice for:

  • partners and customers from the central-south who want to activate workloads in a closer region
  • projects that require a greater geographical distribution of infrastructure;
  • scenarios in which it is useful to foresee a more marked offsite environment;
  • architectures oriented to business continuity and application resilience;
  • organizations that want to keep data in Italy, while expanding the available design options

How to activate MI2 in Openstack as a Service?

You can immediately activate the new region directly from CloudFire Console. If you already have an account you can proceed independently by following this guide, otherwise find out how to start with hither.
